A pop-up is a small, typically temporary window or overlay that can appear on your website. In the pop-up, you can display content, collect user information, or even embed a game directly to the pop-up window.

The pop-up script

A pop-up script is a piece of code that ensures that the pop-up you build in Playable can be displayed on your website. You can say that the pop-up ensures a connection between the platform and your site.

To display the pop-up on your website, you have to insert the pop-up script on your website or in Google Tag Manager.

The pop-up script is universal. This means, that once the pop-up script is in your website, any pop-up from your Playable account can be shown. You just have to activate the pop-up and set the rules for where it should be displayed.

Where to find and insert the script

You can find the script by navigating to one of your pop-up campaigns. In a pop-up campaign, you will see a top-banner where you can click to get the pop-up script. You can also find the pop-up script in the publishing tab. The two options are outlined in the image below:

The script must be inserted into the bottom of your website or you can insert it into Google Tag Manager.

In the platform, you will be able to control:

  • the design of the pop-up

  • the content that is included in the pop-up

  • how the pop-up should behave - including what will trigger the pop-up and on what pages the pop-up should show.

Pop-up general settings, schedule, and devices

Under the general pop-up settings, you have some general options that will control how your pop-up behaves.

Hide pop-up after signup

Based on browser cookies, a user who fills out the registration form in a pop-up will not be shown the same pop-up again.

Note this is different than a user filling out a registration form in a game if the game is embedded in the pop-up.

Activate UTM parameter on external links

This setting adds the following parameters to any external URL you link to from your pop-up:

utm_source=Playable
utm_medium=popup
utm_campaign=[campaign name]

Display pop-up even if others are already being shown

By default, you can only show one Playable pop-up at a time on a particular website URL.

You can have multiple pop-ups on your website, but by default, they can not be displayed on the same page. If you have more than one set to show on the same page, the platform will choose the first pop-up from the overview.

Activating this setting will allow more than one pop-up to show on the same URL. We don't recommend this as a general rule, but in some instances, it may be necessary.

Schedule

Activating a schedule for your pop-up will only show the pop-up on specific days and during specific times. Leave the time fields as default for a pop-up that should be shown for the entire day.

If you are using specific times, make sure that you have the correct time zone set under the Campaign tab.

Devices

Un-checking one of the devices will hide the pop-up when users visit your website from that device.

When would you use this feature?

You may only want a pop-up to show on desktop and tablet, if, for example, it contains too much content to be user-friendly on mobile screens.

Other times you might only want to show a pop-up on mobile if it relates to a specific offer that can only be used on a phone.

It may also make sense to make different versions of a pop-up for large and small screens. But remember that it is pretty easy to adjust your desktop/mobile design using the frontend editor, so it only really makes sense to create separate pop-ups if the content will be significantly different from one device to another.

Publishing the pop-up

You will activate a pop-up in the publishing tab. When you click 'publish campaign' you will be able to set the campaign period in which the pop-up should be active. Once you have activated/published your pop-up you will also get the option to pause your pop-up.

Pop-up rules

The pop-up rules will control the behavior of the pop-up, meaning when and where the pop-up is shown. You can read more about pop-up triggers and conditions in our article here.
