Building a personality test

In this article, we'll provide a step-by-step guide for creating a personality test for your summer campaign that follows a simple concept of 3 questions with 3 personality types. By following this process, you can easily create a fun and engaging personality test for your customers to take.

Get ready to make a splash with your summer marketing and create a personality test that will leave a lasting impression on your customers!

Getting started

When building your campaigns, it’s recommended to start with a good overview. Knowing what you need and establishing a timeline will help you to create a great campaign.

We’re going to be building a vacation-oriented personality test, the participant will be given a vacation type and a suggestion as to where their vacation possibly should go.

Keep in mind that your own personality test can be about a completely different subject, as long as you keep the overall scope of the personality test in mind (3 questions, with 3 personalities). For example, you could create a personality test on “What summer drink are you?” or “What summer activity should you do this week?”

Of course, before you start building your personality test, you should have reflected on your strategy, goals, promotion strategy, and tracking methods.

1. Decide on the personality test logic

The first thing we need to decide when creating a personality is the test logic. Using the Playable platform, there are two different options; the most points or points interval. It’s important to note here that depending on your goals, the logic you should choose may differ.

For our test demonstration, we’re going to go with the most points and each answer will give the participant either 1, 2, or 3 points. To keep it simple, we recommend you keep the same logic as us!

2. Prepare your assets

The second thing you want to focus on is your assets. Here we’ll take a look at what images we need for our questions, personalities, and overall design elements.

For our personality test, we’ll need the following uploaded to the media library:

  • 1 background image 1750x1250px

  • 3 images personality images 400x300px

  • 1 company logo (no recommended size)

So, to create a personality test similar to ours, these are the only design elements you would need to create.

3. Prepare the personality test content

Finally, we’ll need to have some content prepared that fits our overall theme of vacation. Our personality test will give the participant three questions, and depending on the answers they give, they’ll be sorted into three different personalities which include, a vacation type with a description and a suggestion on where to go on vacation.

These are the 3 questions and answers we’ll use in our personality test. Or course, your personality test will include different questions and answers.

  1. To which region of the world would you prefer to travel for your vacation? Answers: Asia, North America, Europe

  2. When it comes to going on vacation, what is your preferred form of transportation? Answers: Flying, Train, Car

  3. Which of the following do you prefer while on vacation? Answers: Spending my time on the beach or at the pool, Going for hikes in nature, Sightseeing and shopping

These are the 3 personalities which include a description for each and a suggestion for where the participant should go on vacation.

  1. Active vacation: You enjoy being on the move and engaging in physical activities. Your ideal vacation would be a high-energy adventure that includes hiking, skiing, or surfing. You enjoy pushing yourself to the limit and thrive on the adrenaline rush of a challenging activity. Suggestion: USA - California

  2. Resort: You are more interested in relaxation and pampering than physical activity. Your ideal vacation would be spent lounging on a beach or by a pool, getting massages, and enjoying delicious food and drinks. You appreciate the finer things in life and are happy to spend your day in a luxurious resort. Suggestion: Thailand - Natai Phuket

  3. City vacation: You are drawn to the energy and excitement of bustling metropolises. Your ideal vacation would be spent exploring a vibrant city, visiting museums and galleries, and trying new foods and experiences. You enjoy the stimulation of a busy environment and thrive on the diversity of people and cultures you encounter. Suggestion: Germany Berlin

When you have these things prepared and ready, you can start building your campaign!

Building the campaign

If you have either a content or layout template you want to use on your campaign you can go ahead and choose these, or proceed as you normally would when building a campaign. We’ll use the basic template layout with a logo section for our personality test. To ease your process, we recommend you to do the same!

1. Take a look at the backend

Let’s start with setting up our backend for the campaign, looking at the “Campaign” tab first. There’s no need for a registration limit or IP limit on the personality test we’ve made, so both of these have been changed to No limit. Again to keep it as simple as possible, we recommend you choose the same. If you decided to include a registration limit, you would have to create a registration limit page in your campaign, so you tell participants that they have reached the limit.

Game settings

Moving on to the “Game Settings” tab. Here we will select and set the game rules, edit the answer layout, and the custom label, and decide whether your Personality test should be a time challenge or not.

The “General” settings for our game will be the following: Game content alignment should be set to Center.

As mentioned before, our personality test will give the result sorting after most points so we’ll use personality type: Calculation: personality with most points.

For the “Answer Layout”, we will go with the following in the settings tab:

  1. Answer layout: Text

  2. Answer padding: 25

  3. Space between answers: 5

Still editing the Answer Layout, change to the Layout tab and check the Font Style, we’ll be using the H4 here.

We’ll be going with the default custom label and our personality test will not be a time challenge.

We’ll switch to the “Personalities” tab, and continue by adding in our three personalities.

Each personality will have a name, which we will also display on the result page of the game, the first one being Active vacation. Here we’ll also add the personality image and the description.

“Results in” will for our personality test be set to Winner flow.

Don’t forget also to add the two other personalities!

Switching to the “Questions” tab, we’ll add our three questions, and change the point value of each answer to fit together with the correct personality. All answers related to the “Resort” type will be given 1 point, all answers related to the “Active Vacation” will be given 2 points and all answers related to the City Vacation will be given 3 points.

Layout

The last change, we’ll make in the backend is in the Layout tab. We want our Personality test to stand out, so we’ll need to have some design and layout settings in place before we start editing in the frontend.

For our “General” layout we will need:

  1. Basecolor (#f8cf03)

  2. Textcolor (#ffffff)

  3. Font (Poppins)

  4. Button text color (#2e2e2e)

Add your background image previously uploaded to the Media Library.

For our “Primary button”, we’ll do the following:

  1. Background color (#005456)

  2. Textcolor (#f8cf03(

  3. Border-radius (35)

The Border-radius we have added will give our button rounded borders.

Our button needs to have some “Button Hover” design changes made as well, these are as follows:

  1. Background color (#005456)

  2. Textcolor (#ffffff)

  3. Border color (#005456)

We have selected Poppins as the font for our campaign and we need 4 different Headline styles. Under “Font style” add and change the 4 headline elements to the following:

  1. H1: Textsize 54 weight 700

  2. H2: Textsize 36 weight 700

  3. H3: Textsize 42 weight 700

  4. H4: Textsize 20 weight 400

Of course, you won’t be using the same colors, fonts, and images as us. But, regarding the other settings, we recommend you follow the same as us to ease your work to a maximum. The more you change, the more complex it can get.

2. Moving on to the frontend

The first thing we will do is add our company logo to the Section “Logo section”, we would like for our logo to display on all pages throughout the game, and setting this up on a Section will do this for us. In the Logo section, add a column in the row and add an image, find your image in the media library.

Moving on to edit the “Flow pages”, we’ll start with our Presentation page. The headline element should be a H1 and the text element’s font size should be set to 18px in the style tab.

The game page will not need any changes in the frontend, so we’ll jump to the “Registration page”.

Our headline here will be a H2, the text element should be set to 18px in the style tab and also for the Registration.

The last page, our “Result page”, will show which personality the participant is.

We’ll set this up in the following order, in the same row and the same column: The personality image, personality name, and personality description.

We will be using the replacement tag feature to show each participant their result without having to set up a result page for each. We recommend you do the same.

Starting with the personality image, using the replacement tag, we will display the image associated with the personality.

For our text elements to be nicely separated, we will make a block for each.

The first block will be used to give the user information about which personality they ended up with, “You got the most points for:”. This text we will set to 18px in font size and make the text color black.

For the second text element, which is the type of person the participant is, we can make use of the replacement tag #personality_name#. We will be setting the font size to 36px and setting the text color to black. We would like for this to stand out because it’s the final result of the test, so adding a weight of 600 will make the text appear more bold.

The third and last text element will show the personality description we have added for each personality using the replacement tag #personality_description#. The font size here will be 18px and the color of the text will also be black.

Lastly, we’ll add a call to action button that will redirect the participant to the start of the game, so they’ll have the option to try the Personality test again and change their answers to get a new travel suggestion.

At this point, your Personality test should be almost done! But, not so fast, you need to make sure to test it first!

3. Checking and testing

Before we want to have participants try our personality test, we’ll be taking a few steps to ensure that everything is as we would like to have it.

First, view the campaign in the other two view options, tablet, and mobile, and make sure your layout and content are looking good and are responsive on each view.

Try your Personality test, again and again, and get your colleagues to try it out too. Make sure, it’s ready to go!

4. Publishing

Now, you are ready to set your campaign live and start sharing it. In the “Publishing” tab, you have the campaign analysis tool, this is the last step to ensure that everything is in order.

  • Take a look at the analysis, and fix what needs to be fixed (if any).

  • Select the period you would like the campaign to run for and press confirm.

Participants will now be able to enter and try your personality test. Congrats, you made a personality test!

Now, you are ready to promote your personality test, and start collecting data!
